IRS REMINDER ON CHARITABLE GIVING: The tax benefit for charitable contributions is available for taxpayers who itemize contributions. Only contributions actually made during the tax year are deductible. If a taxpayer pledges $500 in September but pays the charity only $200 by 12/31/09, the 2009 deduction would be $200. Credit card charges and payments by check are included in the year they are given to the charity even though the taxpayer may not pay the credit card bill or have the bank account debited until the next calendar year.
