DOLLARS FOR SCHOLARS PARTNERS
What are Collegiate Partners? Collegiate Partners are colleges, universities and other accredited postsecondary institutions that demonstrate their commitment to the development of private sector student aid by supporting the mission of Scholarship America and the Dollars for Scholars® program. Collegiate Partner institutions make the following commitments relating to undergraduate students. • Dollars for Scholars scholarships will be used to fill any unmet student need remaining after the institution’s financial aid package has been calculated. Dollars for Scholars defers to the institution’s formula for determining student need. • When unmet need no longer exists, Dollars for Scholars scholarships of up to $1,000 will be used to adjust the self-help portion of a student’s financial aid package. Dollars for Scholars prefers that loans be reduced before work-study grants. However, if the self-help portion of a student’s aid package is not large enough to completely offset a Dollars for Scholars award of up to $1,000, Dollars for Scholars recognizes the institution’s right to make adjustments to its institutional grant to the extent that the Dollars for Scholars award exceeds total self-help. • Treatment of the portion of Dollars for Scholars scholarships that exceed $1,000 will be at the institution’s discretion. • Collegiate Partners also provide additional support in many ways. For example, Collegiate Partners will usually: - provide speakers for Dollars for Scholars chapter workshops, - host Dollars for Scholars events on their campuses, and - support efforts and provide leadership to organize local Dollars for Scholars chapters.
What are Partner Plus Institutions? A Partner Plus school is a school that will continue to reduce the self-help portion of the student’s financial aid package (loans and workstudy) beyond the contractual limit of $1,000 for all Collegiate Partners. Partner Plus schools have indicated the “threshold” limit for their school which is listed at the end of the college description in bold black type. We would encourage chapters to consider larger awards for students having unmet need and for students attending Partner Plus schools. Please contact your regional office if you have any questions.
What are Matching Partners? Matching Partners are Collegiate Partners that make further commitments to undergraduate students who have unmet need by agreeing to match scholarship awards coming to their campuses from Dollars for Scholars chapters (a few Matching Partners, at their option, provide matching awards even when the student’s need has been met). These matching funds represent resources dedicated exclusively for this purpose and do not replace previously awarded institutional grants. Matching Partner institutions make the following commitments: • To match scholarship awards coming to their campus from Dollars for Scholars chapters with the maximum amount matched per student for each academic year set by the Matching Partner • To agree that matching funds represent resources dedicated for this purpose and will not replace previously awarded institutional grants • To match Dollars for Scholars awards one year beyond the Collegiate Partners Agreement Matching award policies vary between colleges in the amount of the match per award and the total dollars budgeted each year. In some cases, the matching funds are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Many participating schools require the student to demonstrate financial need or meet other qualifications to be eligible for the match. Many Collegiate Partners may be interested in becoming Matching Partners but are restricted by their school’s policy for the handling of outside aid. Most Collegiate Partners may already be meeting student need levels by 95 to 100 percent.
How to Apply for Matching Awards (available from Matching Partners Only!) Each year, Matching Award Request Forms are made available to all Dollars for Scholars chapters. This form is to be completed and signed by a chapter official for each student receiving matching funds from Matching Partners. When completed, the form should be forwarded to the designated college official listed in color at the end of the Matching Partner’s description in this directory.
NOTE: If your school is listed as a Matching Partner, a completed Matching Award Request Formhas already been submitted bythe CCSF. Please contact us at ccsf@colonial.netwith any questions or concerns. Once you receive your matching fund award, it would be extremely appreciated if you would notify the CCSF of this fact. This is our only way of monitoring the Matching Fund Program. |
